Adamawa Governor Revokes Atiku, Others of Traditional Titles

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has revoked several traditional titles, including those held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Boni Haruna, and himself, as part of a restructuring of the state’s emirates and chiefdoms.

The announcement was made during the coronation of the newly installed Chief of Madagali. Governor Fintiri stated that the restructuring aimed to modernize the traditional system and align district heads with the newly created emirates and chiefdoms. He explained that titles conferred under the previous jurisdictions were no longer valid.

“Hence, traditional titles acquired from the old emirates and chiefdoms are hereby dropped. The constituted traditional councils of the new emirates and chiefdoms are therefore directed to recommend new titles for approval in line with the statutory dictates of tradition,” Fintiri said.

Among the affected titles, Atiku Abubakar lost his position as Waziri Adamawa, Boni Haruna forfeited his title as Makama Mubi, while Governor Fintiri relinquished his title of Sarki Yaki Mubi. Several other prominent individuals were also impacted by the changes.

The newly established emirates and chiefdoms were carved out from the Adamawa and Mubi emirates, where the revoked titles were originally awarded. As part of the restructuring, traditional councils within these new jurisdictions have been directed to submit recommendations for new titles, which will be reviewed and approved in line with state customary laws.

Governor Fintiri also clarified that the Lamido of Adamawa, as the state’s paramount traditional ruler, could submit the names of affected individuals for reconsideration. However, any reinstatement or new appointment would require final approval from the state government.
