Pastor Adeboye Should Retire And Go Home –Human Rights Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong

Prominent human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), to step back from public engagements, go home and “rest,” citing the cleric’s recent remarks about the state of the nation as offensive to the sensibilities of Nigerians.

In his tweet, Effiong slammed Pastor Adeboye’s stance on national matters, describing it as a defense of the current administration, which he labeled “incompetent and oppressive.”

He argued that such positions mock the principles of Christianity and contribute to the growing disillusionment many Nigerians feel toward religious institutions.

“Many people in our country have stopped going to church due to the sickening hypocrisy and connivance of these religious leaders,” Effiong remarked. “The fact that Adeboye is holding brief for this government is a mockery of Christianity.”

The lawyer also took aim at Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of perpetuating corruption in the oil sector and making contradictory statements about fuel subsidies.

“Tinubu has paid billions in fuel subsidies, contrary to his public assertions,” Effiong said, adding that the government has failed to address the sector’s systemic issues.

Effiong was particularly critical of Pastor Adeboye’s claim that his prayers were responsible for stabilizing the naira, calling it “preposterous.”

He emphasized that economic and monetary policies, not prayers, determine exchange rates, stating, “It is either his prayers are not working, or God is not listening to him.”

The lawyer further noted that some of the nation’s most corrupt leaders are among Adeboye’s followers, urging the pastor to reflect on his influence. “He should look himself in the mirror,” Effiong concluded.

These comments have ignited a broader conversation on the role of religious leaders in governance and their accountability in addressing societal challenges.

“His controversial statements on the state of the nation offend the sensibilities of right-thinking members of the society. In life, it is always better to know when to exit the stage.

“The fact that Adeboye is holding brief for this incompetent and oppressive government is a mockery of Christianity. Many people in our country have stopped going to Church due to the sickening hypocrisy and connivance of these religious leaders.

“Tinubu has paid billions in fuel subsidy, contrary to his public statements. Tinubu’s government has not addressed the rot and corruption in the oil sector.

“We are not all naive and gullible.

“It is preposterous for Adeboye to say that it is his prayers that has made the Naira not to depreciate further.

“Prayers do not have any effect on the exchange rate. Exchange rate is determined by economic and monetary policies, and the productivity of a country. Adeboye has been praying for decades for Nigeria and Nigerian politicians and things haven’t improved.

“It is either his prayers are not working or God is not listening to him. Some of the most corrupt and evil politicians and political leaders in our country today are disciples and followers of Pastor Adeboye. He should look himself in the mirror,” he tweeted.
