AFCON: Sadiq Umar Declared Unfit, Onuachu Steps in

Another striker for the Super Eagles, Sadiq Umar, has been declared unfit for the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

This development follows the earlier exclusion of Victor Boniface from the tournament set to commence tomorrow, January 13, in Ivory Coast.

Umar, aged 26, sustained a knee injury during Nigeria’s 2-0 friendly loss to the Syli Stars of Guinea on Monday.

However, a statement released on Friday via the official Super Eagles account on X revealed that Paul Onuachu would step in as the replacement for Sadiq Umar.

“Sadiq Umar is out of the AFCON 2023 squad due to injury and Paul Onuachu replaces him.”

Onuachu participated in the AFCON 2019 finals held in Egypt; however, he was unable to participate in the preceding competition in Cameroon due to an injury.

Onuachu, in 15 games for Trabzonspor this season, has nine goals and three assists.
