AFCON: Don’t Over-Celebrate If Super Eagles Defeat Bafana Bafana – High Commission Urges Nigerian Community

The Nigeria High Commission in Pretoria has issued an advisory to the Nigerian community in South Africa ahead of the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday.

The advisory, dated 6th February, 2024, was prompted by some “potentially inflammatory online comments” made by some South African citizens against Nigerians living in the host country, apparently influenced by the upcoming match.

The High Commission said that some of the comments contained “veiled threats” against Nigerians, such as “Nigerians cooking jollof rice” before the match, and “showing pepper” to Nigerians if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.

The High Commission urged the Nigerian community to be watchful of their utterances, be mindful of where they choose to watch the match especially in public places, and refrain from engaging in loud, riotous or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles win the match.

The advisory also advised Nigerians to maintain the good conduct they are known for, and be law abiding before, during and after the match. It further advised them to report any provocations to the appropriate authorities, rather than reciprocating them.

The High Commission expressed confidence in the Super Eagles, and wished them success in the match.

The semi-final match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana is scheduled to kick off at 6:00 pm local time on Wednesday. The winner will face either Ivory Coast or Dr Congo in the final on Sunday.
