Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerian lawyers to reject any notion of a coup as a solution to the country’s challenges.
Speaking at the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos on Monday, Akpabio emphasized that a coup would only deny Nigerians their freedom and hinder progress.
He urged legal professionals to lead by example in promoting integrity, courage, and justice, and stressed the importance of a cultural shift in attitudes and mindsets.
Akpabio highlighted the need for unity and collective effort in rebuilding Nigeria, asserting that no stain in the country is insurmountable if citizens stand together.
Akpabio encouraged the lawyers to transform their thinking as a means to effect broader change, stating, “We must transform our minds, not only to transform Nigeria, but to transform West Africa and the entire world.”
He stated, “We believe strongly that there is no stain in our country that we cannot erase if we stand together in brotherhood.
“As we gather, let us remember that our strength lies not only in our numbers but also in our uniform.
“We are not merely a crowd. We are a very formidable force for positive change in Africa,” he added.
The conference also featured a speech by former Ghanaian President John Mahama, who discussed Africa’s future amid rising security, economic, and political challenges.
Mahama emphasised the need for legal reforms, economic diversification, and youth empowerment to address ongoing struggles. He noted that while Africa has made progress in democratic governance, economic development remains constrained by structural weaknesses.
