The funeral service of Herbert Wigwe, the late CEO of Access Holdings, turned into a scene of controversy and politicking as the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, aired his grievances over the applause received by former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The event, held in Port Harcourt, witnessed the convergence of political heavyweights and prominent figures, including former Rivers State governors, Chibuike Amaechi and Nyesom Wike, alongside the incumbent governor, Sim Fubara. Also in attendance were Abia State governor, Alex Otti, and renowned businessman Aliko Dangote.
Akpabio’s remarks, comparing the reception he received to that of Peter Obi’s, stirred discomfort among attendees. His attempt to inject humour into the solemn occasion by urging those present to console the “grieving widow” of the late Herbert Wigwe, who also perished alongside her husband amidst the sombre atmosphere only added to the unease.
Atedo Peterside, President and Founder of Anap Foundation, swiftly condemned Akpabio’s comments as “self-centred and insensitive,” highlighting the need for decorum and sensitivity in public discourse, especially during such solemn events.
The funeral marked the final farewell to Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and their son, Chizi, who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash. The trio was laid to rest in their country home of Isiokpo, Rivers State.
