Remi Tinubu has expressed confidence that the Nigerian Senate is taking the necessary steps in addressing the sexual harassment allegation made by Kogi lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Oduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
She also emphasized that women should carry themselves in a way that prevents men from harassing them.
In a statement released on Thursday by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs. Tinubu described the Senate as a mature institution deserving of respect.
“I know, with what is going on in the Senate, you may say, why am I not taking a position?” Mrs. Tinubu said, referring to Mrs. Akpoti-Oduaghan’s sexual harassment allegation against Mr. Akpabio.
“I believe that the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is. It is an inside place and it’s a mature chamber. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honour for you to be in that place alone,” Mrs. Tinubu stated.
The first lady, who previously served as a senator for 12 years, urged women in the Senate to uphold their dignity and composure.

“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young, but people compliment you all the time, only that, women raise yourself, don’t be in a position that men will be talking to you anyhow,” Mrs. Tinubu added.
Her comments come in the wake of Mrs. Akpoti-Oduaghan’s sexual harassment claims against Mr. Akpabio, which he denied during Thursday’s plenary. Following the allegation, the Senate suspended the Kogi lawmaker, accusing her of violating house rules and tarnishing the Senate’s image.
The suspension has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians criticizing the upper chamber for seemingly dismissing the core of Mrs. Akpoti-Oduaghan’s claims to shield Mr. Akpabio.
