Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State High Court, which is located in the Eket local government area, sentenced a 37-year-old man named Uduak Moses Idimudo to life in prison for the rape of two girls who were JSS students in Eket at the time and were 14 and 15 years old.

Judge Efiong Efiong jailed Idimudo, an Efoi native of Eket council in Akwa Ibom, yesterday after finding him guilty of 19 of the 20 counts of rape.

One of the victims testified in court that in July 2020, while she and her 14-year-old friend were selling fried cow skin meat (pomo) in Efoi, the prisoner purchased the meat for N700 and demanded that they either go with him to his room to collect the money or go sell the meat and return it.

She claimed that on their way home, they returned to the prisoner’s residence as he instructed them to get their money; nevertheless, he insisted that they follow him into his chamber, and they complied.

According to the first prosecution witness, the prisoner shoved her and her friend into his bed, ripped their pants off with force, stuck his penis inside their vaginas, and then proceeded to rape them. After that, he gave them N350 instead of the N700 he was supposed to.

The JSS 3 student further described how the prisoner urged her and her friend to return to his home for the remaining amount, but he threatened to murder them if they told their parents or anybody else about the rape.

The Akwa Ibom government will in the coming months have to step in to checkmate this worrying trend.
