The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as David Effiong, an indigene of the state, for allegedly causing a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade regalia, despite an existing ban on masquerade activities.
Effiong was apprehended after residents reported that he was creating a nuisance and allegedly destroying property within the community on Tuesday.
The arrest comes amid renewed enforcement of the state government’s directive prohibiting all public masquerade displays.
Confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, stated that Effiong will be charged in court.

Police noted that many masqueraders across the state have reportedly become a menace despite repeated warnings from authorities.
The crackdown follows a statewide ban ordered by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, citing increasing incidents of intimidation, violence, and property destruction linked to masqueraders.
