Dr. Abel Damina, a prominent Nigerian pastor and founder of Abel Damina Ministries International has stirred controversy with a bold declaration that alcohol and cigarettes are not sins urging people to use common sense regarding their lifestyle choices.
In a recent sermon shared on social media, Damina urged his congregation to reconsider traditional interpretations of sin, particularly regarding Adam and Eve’s actions in the Garden of Eden.
“Adam and Eve ate nothing. They didn’t eat anything,” Damina said, addressing the biblical narrative of humanity’s fall. The preacher questioned long-held assumptions, asking, “Were you there? So how do we know whether they ate something or not?” He explained that Jesus, being omnipresent, offers the most accurate perspective on the incident.
Referencing Mark 7:18, Damina quoted Jesus: “Do you not perceive that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him?” He used this scripture to argue that Adam and Eve’s sin wasn’t tied to eating, but rather to disobedience.

Damina emphasized that consuming alcohol or smoking cigarettes does not inherently make one a sinner. “Alcohol is not a sin. Cigarettes are not a sin,” he said, doubling down on his statement with a challenge: “If you like, put it on a newspaper headline—I said it!”
“Am I saying you should smoke? You should have sense from your father’s house to know that cigar will cut short your life. Am I saying you should drink alcohol? You should know it could lead you to lie down in a gutter with your shirt and trousers will disappear. You should have sense to know that one from your mother’s house..” He said.
