In a bid to address the prevailing state of insecurity and hunger in Nigeria, members of the Labour Party in the Anambra State House of Assembly have taken a significant step, advocating for emergency measures and offering personal sacrifices.
Following an emergency caucus meeting, the eight lawmakers who are signatories to the communique voiced their concerns, echoing the sentiments expressed by the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi. The caucus proposed a series of actions directed at both the federal and state levels of government.
The Labour Party lawmakers urged political leaders to prioritize the pressing issues of security and hunger over other sectors, advocating for the suspension of all non-essential activities, particularly infrastructure projects, for the next six months.
In the words of the caucus “His Excellency, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu should suspend work on all other sectors including infrastructure for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger in the nation.”
Additionally, the lawmakers called upon all state governors, including Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, to follow suit by suspending infrastructural development projects within their respective states for the same duration.
Demonstrating solidarity with the plight of the masses, the Anambra Labour Party House of Assembly members made a remarkable pledge. They announced their decision to relinquish their basic salaries for the next six months, viewing it as a tangible contribution towards alleviating the suffering of the populace.
According to the caucus “We, the Labour Party House of Assembly members will relinquish our basic salary for six months to be our contribution to alleviate the suffering of the masses.”
The lawmakers extended commendation to Mr. Peter Obi for his proactive stance and selfless efforts in addressing the nation’s challenges. They emphasized the urgency of the situation, stressing the need for swift action from both federal and state governments.
In their concluding remarks, “We must commend our leader His Excellency Mr. Peter Gregory Obi for this selfless effort to ensure the stability and growth of our Nation. It really shows that he is committed to making this nation a better place for all of us.”
