The weekend in Eredivisie saw disgruntled fans of Ajax vandalised the Johan Cruyff Arena in the game between Ajax and the league’s reigning champion Feyenoord.
The game was abandoned on Sunday night when unsavory incidents occured. Fans were spotted throwing flares onto the pitch throughout the match.
After the game was called off, riot ensued outside the stadium and police were seen charging at people and using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
It was discovered by CCTV footages that many of the fans were seen destroying the stadium’s facility, breaking windows and destroying doors.
Just 11 minutes into the second half of the game, the match was called off with the home team already losing by 3 goals to nil.
They conceded all 3 goals in the first half and this led to the supporters throwing flares into the pitch as a way of expressing their annoyance.
Ajax, which had a dismal start to the season with just one victory, is currently ranked 13th in the standings after Feyenoord won the league crown the previous year.
Ajax supporters are unaccostomed to this bad run of play after watching their team win three of the last four Eredivisie championships and advance to the Champions League semifinals just four years ago.
However, they have only won three points once in their first four league games this season, defeating Heracles on the first day before things quickly went south.
Next, a 2-2 tie with Excelsior, followed by another deadlock against Fortuna Sittard, marked the beginning of growing displeasure with the team’s performance.
A terrible start to the season was becoming worse after a 3-1 loss to FC Twente the previous weekend, and the crowd expressed their displeasure on Sunday night.
