The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Garba Musa Kwankwaso, a nephew of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, alongside several other officials over their alleged involvement in a drug supply fraud affecting all 44 local government areas in the state.
The investigation initially led to the arrest of Alhaji Mohammed Kabawa, the Permanent Secretary of the State’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in connection with a multi-billion Naira drug supply scam.
Following this, additional arrests were made, including that of the Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abdullahi Bashir, who is also the chairman of Tauroni LGA.
The suspects are accused of conspiring to award a contract to Novomed Pharmaceuticals for the supply of drugs to 38 local government areas in Kano State, in violation of public procurement laws.
According to preliminary findings by the Commission, each of the 38 local governments paid N9.1 million to Novomed for the drugs, but the supplies were never delivered.
Further investigation revealed that Garba Musa Kwankwaso, the Managing Director of Novomed Pharmaceuticals and nephew of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, was also arrested in connection with the scam.
The Public Relations Officer of the Commission, Kabiru I. Kabiru, confirmed the arrests and stated that the suspects are cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing.
Kabiru emphasized that the Commission is committed to uncovering the full extent of the fraud and ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.
He also confirmed that the suspects remain in the Commission’s custody at the time of this report.
