Former Governor of Jigawa State and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has predicted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is heading toward a likely split, with its National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and others potentially returning to the PDP.
Lamido made this statement while delivering a keynote address at the PDP congress held at Aminu Kano Triangle in Jigawa State.
His remarks come amid a wave of defections from the PDP to the APC, as several prominent political figures—governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives—switch allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to a report by Daily Trust, the trend has raised concerns among political observers who warn that the growing dominance of the APC could signal the emergence of a one-party system—an outcome many view as detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic health.

Some political analysts have also suggested that the APC may face internal tensions and possible implosion due to the surge of former opposition figures joining the party. The influx, they argue, could strain the party’s structure and create ideological rifts ahead of the next elections.
Lamido’s prediction, while bold, adds to the ongoing conversation about the realignment of political forces and the fluid nature of party loyalty in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Lamido said, “I’m confident that all those who left the PDP will return, including Ganduje, because very soon, the APC will burst and split into factions, having accommodated people with different mindsets.
“I said it, and I repeat: within six months, all those who defected to the APC will come back, and the PDP will rise with full force to wrest power in 2027.”
The Jigawa former governor however, urged party members not to be discouraged by the defection of some elected officials to the APC, attributing their actions to fear of intimidation and harassment.
But reacting, the APC National Director of Publicity, Alhaji Bala Ibrahim, told Daily Trust in a telephone interview last night that “The PDP is dreaming because it is getting depleted every day.”
The APC said, “They are dreaming. They have now started hallucinating, thinking that there will be a reverse trend. But APC is stronger and is not threatened by anything as to warrant a counter defection.”
