Nigerian Army Graduates 5,937 New Soldiers to Fight 'Banditry, Cattle Rustling, Others in Northern Region

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, has announced that the 5,937 soldiers who recently graduated from Depot NA will be deployed to combat banditry, cattle rustling, and related crimes in the northern regions of Nigeria.

Addressing attendees at the passing out parade for the 86 Regular Recruit intake of the Depot Nigeria Army in Zaria on Saturday, Lagbaja, serving as the special guest of honour and reviewing officer, emphasized the crucial role of the new soldiers in addressing the country’s pressing security challenges.

He highlighted that the newly trained soldiers would contribute to efforts against insurgency in the northeast, as well as tackling banditry and cattle rustling in the northwest.

“The fresh products passing out today will form part of the solution to the challenge of insurgency in the north-east, banditry and cattle rustling in the north-west.

“They will fight the farmers/herders clashes in the north-central, secessionist agitation and cultism in the south-east, militancy and vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure in the south-south and south-west.”

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja emphasized the continuous nature of military training, affirming that the Nigerian Army has implemented post-Depot training programs to ensure soldiers master a variety of weapons and equipment, enhancing their effectiveness in warfare.

He also highlighted ongoing improvements in welfare packages aimed at addressing soldiers’ medical, recreational, and educational needs to enhance their career satisfaction. Lagbaja extended congratulations to the 5,937 recruits, emphasizing that a soldier’s life entails sacrifices for the country and upholding allegiance.

He stated, “Sacrifice involves obeying orders, whether on land, sea, or air, and prioritizing national duty over personal comfort.”

Lagbaja reminded them that choosing to become soldiers meant embracing the highest call of duty for any Nigerian, joining a distinguished group requiring exceptional discipline, loyalty, integrity, and dedication.

He charged them to uphold the expectations of the Nigerian Army and the nation, urging them not to falter in their responsibilities.
