The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State chapter, extended a helping hand to 250 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sokoto by donating essential food items on Tuesday.
During the handover of the provisions, which included rice, beans, vegetable oil, salt, seasoning, and water, the chapter’s chairman, Professor Nurudeen Almustapha, said the gesture is a manifestation of ASUU’s commitment to aiding the less privileged in society.
Prof. Almustapha stated, “This is part of the programs initiated by our union to help the needy; this time it is for North West and North Central. We are done with North Central, while we started that of North West in Katsina.”
“We have done it in Zamfara and Kebbi states, and now in Sokoto today as part of the North West, where we are flagging off the distribution to give 250 members, all women of the IDPs.” He said.
ASUU dedicated a total of N50 million for this initiative, covering both the North Central and North West regions, with other zones already benefiting from the program. To fund these charitable endeavors, union members collectively contributed a minimum of N2,000 over six months.

During the occasion, Prof. Almustapha seized the opportunity to appeal to authorities at all levels to prioritize security measures that would facilitate the return of those residing in IDP camps across the nation to their homes. He further disclosed that ASUU has been actively advising the Federal Government on strategies to address insecurity, with the ultimate goal of enabling the camp residents to regain their homes.
Nasiru Kalambina, the Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on State Emergency Management Authority (SEMA), offered assurances that the state government is diligently working to expedite the return of camp residents to their homes. He added that through SEMA, the state government plans to extend further relief measures to those residing in the IDP camp.
Grateful for the generous donation, some of the beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for ASUU’s benevolence while urging other organizations and individuals in society to extend their hands of friendship to those living in the camp. This compassionate act by ASUU serves as a testament to the power of collective efforts to support the less fortunate.
