ASUU Rejects Tinubu’s Constituted Governing Boards, Raises Fear of Another Strike

Academic activities in Nigerian public universities may face disruption once again as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected a list of governing board members recently approved by Bola Tinubu.

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the President of ASUU, contends that the list is illegal and fails to address the union’s concerns, prompting them to issue a two-week strike notice.

According to AIT Online, despite the federal Ministry of Education publishing a list of appointees to the governing boards of 111 federal institutions on May 17, 2024, Professor Osodeke insists it is unacceptable.

He asserts that ASUU is demanding the reinstatement of boards they claim were unlawfully dissolved before their tenure expired.

The union plans to reconvene on May 28 to assess the situation and determine its next course of action.

Meanwhile, Chris Maiyaki, the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, has appealed to ASUU to consider the interests of students and refrain from escalating tensions.

In June 2023, Bola Tinubu’s directive to dissolve the boards of all federal tertiary institutions sparked discontent among university teachers, leading to strikes in institutions like the University of Abuja.

The governing boards of universities are legally tasked with overseeing the election of new vice-chancellors, distinct from the responsibilities of outgoing vice-chancellors or the Minister of Education.
