The Former Labour Party Spokesperson in Lagos, Ife Salako has sparked debate with a strongly worded statement questioning the performance of Nigeria’s leaders.
In a post shared on X, Salako reflected on past administrations, noting that former military head of state, Muritala Muhammad, led Nigeria for only six months yet was credited with significant positive strides.

He also pointed to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who was in office for just two years, but under whom, according to him, “all index read positive.”
Contrasting these examples with the present, Salako criticized leaders who, despite spending a full four-year term, fail to bring meaningful change while living extravagant lifestyles.

“Isn’t it amazing that some people believe their leaders are meant to make life unbearable for them while these same leaders live extravagant lifestyle?” he asked.
Salako concluded with a stinging remark directed at current and past underperforming leaders: “If you can’t make the lives of your people better in four years, you can’t do anything in either years.”
His statement has since drawn sharp reactions online, with many Nigerians agreeing that long years in office should not be an excuse for failed governance.
Responding to his post, X user @TOrimalade30196 wrote: “I wholeheartedly agree with you. Four years is more than enough to make meaningful impacts in the lives of the citizens. However we have not really had a good leader in Nigeria. Possibly Mohammed and Yaradua might have been good but unfortunately death robbed us of their services.”
Another user, @OladeleKapital, added: “What Nigerians are clamouring for is sustainable development, not a situation one government will borrow the hell for the next government to figure out, is this difficult to understand?”
The debate continues to amplify frustrations over governance, with many citizens demanding accountability and urgent reforms.
