In a horrifying incident on Sunday night, suspected bandits launched a brutal attack on Kurya village in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto, resulting in the tragic deaths of a mother, her daughter-in-law, and two children who were burnt alive in their home.

The assailants struck around 8:30 pm, claiming the lives of 12 villagers and abducting three women, one of whom lost her husband during the assault.

Yusuf Garba, a resident of the area, described the grim scene, noting that the attackers faced fierce resistance from the army, leading to potential heavy losses on their part.

“Among the victims were one woman who was burnt to death along with her daughter in-law and two children right inside their room,” Garba revealed.

“We are suspecting they too suffered heavy losses because we saw blood stains in where they parked their motorcycles. But you know they don’t leave their corpses behind,” he added.

The police confirmed seven deaths during the attack, with the Sokoto Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Ahmed Rufa’i, indicating that they were still compiling casualty figures.

This tragic incident follows a recent operation by the army, which resulted in the rescue of 66 abductees from Gundumi forest in the eastern part of the state between last Thursday and Saturday.

Sources told Daily Trust that numerous bandits were killed in the course of that operation.
