Bandits Abduct Two Brothers on Kwara Farm Hours After Tinubu Claims Nigeria Has Defeated Terrorism

Bandits struck again in Kwara State on Wednesday, abducting two brothers from their cassava farm in Edu Local Government Area, just hours after Bola Tinubu declared that Nigeria had “won the war on terrorism” during his Independence Day broadcast.

The attack happened at Bokungi Zambufu community under Lafiagi Emirate while the victims were working on their farmland. Witnesses told Reporters that the gunmen stormed the farm and fired sporadically, forcing villagers to flee for safety.

The two brothers were unable to escape and were whisked away by the attackers.

One of the victims has been identified as Mohammed Mohammed, a prominent figure in the community and former President of the National Association of Nupe Students (NANUS).

Their whereabouts remain unknown as of press time, and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement.

The incident has heightened fears across Kwara North, where farmers already live under the constant threat of kidnappers. Residents accused authorities of failing to curb the rising wave of attacks, warning that agricultural activities in the area are under grave threat.

The abduction is the latest in a string of violent raids. On Monday, bandits kidnapped two sons of a youth leader in Essanti village, Patigi LGA, around 1:30 p.m. while they were returning from the farm.

A day earlier, on Sunday night, heavily armed men stormed Marri Village in Patigi during a downpour, killing one resident, injuring another, and escaping with several motorcycles.

That same day, the Kwara State Police Command confirmed that 12 vigilantes  including the Baale (community head) of Ogbayo  were killed in Oke-Ode, Ifelodun LGA, after gunmen invaded the area at dawn and opened fire indiscriminately.

Despite this surge of violence, Tinubu had earlier declared in his Independence Day message that the Northwest and Northeast are “no longer battlegrounds,” insisting that Nigeria had triumphed over terrorism.

For many residents in Kwara, however, the latest abductions expose the stark reality on the ground: insecurity remains widespread, and the government’s promises of victory ring hollow.
