Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country.
Hasina, who has led Bangladesh since 2009, is reportedly onboard a helicopter heading to the Indian city of Agartala.
Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman is set to address the nation, but his speech has been delayed as he meets with “stakeholders.”
According to BBC Bengali, Hasina’s resignation comes amid massive protests in the capital, Dhaka, where thousands have taken to the streets. This follows clashes between police and protesters that left at least 90 people dead.
Some demonstrators have reportedly stormed Hasina’s official residence in Dhaka. Over the past month, approximately 300 people have been killed as authorities cracked down on anti-government protesters.
The student-led protests, which began last month with peaceful demands to abolish quotas in civil service jobs, have since evolved into a broader anti-government movement, resulting in nationwide unrest and calls for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
