Sanusi Bature, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, has claimed that Aminu Ado Bayero was never the Emir of Kano. Speaking on Arise Television, Bature clarified that Bayero was appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as the Emir of the eight metropolitan local governments of Kano city, not the entire Kano Emirate.
Bature stated, “The previous administration of Ganduje decided to bastardize the history of the Emirate and brought politics into it. The Emirate of Kano pre-dates Nigeria and the country’s constitution. It has over a thousand years of history with people living together under one Emir.”
He continued, “The action of the governor was to protect the integrity of the Emirate as an institution. The politicization of the Emirate is something Yusuf promised to address during his campaign. Ganduje’s administration created the Kano city Emirate, appointing Aminu Ado Bayero as its emir. However, this was just for the eight metropolitan local governments, not the entire 44 local governments of Kano.”
According to Bature, Governor Yusuf’s administration is focused on restoring the historical Emirate to its former glory. “With the revision of the law under one united Kano, the Emirate that Aminu served no longer exists. He was only the Emir of the Kano city Emirate, which has now been abolished. He was the 14th Emir of Kano, but his jurisdiction was limited to the eight metropolitan areas.”

Governor Yusuf deposed Bayero and reinstated Muhammed Sanusi as the Emir of Kano. However, Bayero has refused to vacate his Nassarawa palace and has contested the state government’s action in court.
Bature emphasized, “This is not the first time an Emir was deposed. Ganduje did it, and Sanusi left Kano for peace to reign. Sanusi is now back in Kano after the law was repealed. I want to make it clear that Aminu Ado Bayero was never the Emir of Kano. He was appointed an Emir of the eight metropolitan local governments of Kano city.”
Bayero’s legal challenge to the governor’s decision is ongoing. Meanwhile, the people of Kano await the outcome of this political and legal dispute that has stirred significant attention in the state.
