Labour Party 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has voiced strong concerns over accountability in government, lauding the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Betta Edu, as a welcomed development.
Obi emphasized that the investigation must be thorough, ensuring all culpable parties face consequences.
“In a sad coincidence, the alleged fraudulent diversion of N585 million by Ms. Edu mirrors the ongoing N37 billion misappropriation probe of the former minister holding the same portfolio. The Ministry appears to be a conduit for siphoning public funds under the guise of aiding the poor,” stated Obi.
Expressing disgust at the mismanagement of funds intended for poverty alleviation during a time of severe suffering, Obi stressed, “It is not only immoral but also insensitive for those entrusted with funds for public welfare to literally steal from the poor.”
As a response to these cases, Obi urged the administration to conduct a thorough system-wide investigation into reported cases of fraud and corruption among high government officials. Aligning with public sentiment, he called on the government to address public sector corruption urgently.
Peter Obi, who ran as the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 campaign, advocates for a comprehensive approach to ensure accountability and transparency in governance.
