Biden Moves to Frustrate Trump’s Massive Deportation Plan

Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, President Joe Biden’s administration is taking steps to extend protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants whose Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is set to expire early in the Trump administration.

According to U.S. officials and documents cited by The New York Times on Friday, this move reflects an effort by the Biden administration to complicate Trump’s plans for large-scale deportations.

TPS is a program established to allow individuals from countries affected by conflict or natural disasters to live and work in the United States.

According to the Congressional Research Service, the program currently supports about one million immigrants from 17 nations.

During his first term, Trump attempted to terminate TPS but faced legal and logistical hurdles.

His advisers have signaled that curtailing or eliminating the program remains a key component of his broader immigration agenda, which seeks to reduce both legal and illegal immigration.

Since being declared president-elect in November, Trump has made several appointments to advance his immigration priorities, including plans for large-scale deportations.

Among these appointments is Tom Homan, named as Trump’s “border czar.” Additionally, Rodney S. Scott, a veteran border official and former Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol under Trump, has been appointed to lead Customs and Border Protection.

Caleb Vitello, a senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official, has been named acting head of ICE.

Both appointments aim to support Trump’s proposed overhaul of the U.S. immigration system with a focus on mass deportations.
