Rev. Joseph Akinfenwa, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ibadan, Oyo State, has called on the Federal Government to declare a three-day national prayer and fasting period in response to the country’s escalating economic crisis.

The call was made during the Advent Carol of Nine Lessons and Songs held in Ibadan, where the bishop expressed concern over the rising cost of food items, transportation, and accommodation.

He emphasized that the situation required urgent divine intervention.

While acknowledging that the economic crisis is a global issue, Bishop Akinfenwa stressed that Nigeria’s situation is particularly worrisome.

“We are blessed with enough natural resources and therefore shouldn’t suffer as such,” he said, urging not only the government but all citizens to join hands in tackling the crisis.

Akinfenwa also suggested that government officials could set an example by cutting their salaries and allowances to cater to the poor.

In addition to his economic concerns, Bishop Akinfenwa reminded Christians to stay focused on the second coming of Christ.

Akinfenwa urged the faithful to pursue a deeper relationship with God, put God’s word into practice, and shun the love of money.

As the season of Advent unfolds, Akinfenwa encourages everyone to find solace in God’s word, no matter the situation. “His second coming is the most significant event this era is waiting for,” he said.
