Electricity workers, members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), heeded the call from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and initiatied a nationwide blackout.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, confirmed the shutdown of the national grid, attributing it to the organized labour strike.
The strike, declared indefinitely by the NLC and Trade Union Congress, commenced on Tuesday, in contravention of an existing interim injunction from the National Industrial Court. The blackout has already affected the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas.
Special Adviser to Bola Tinubu on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, condemned the unions’ actions, deeming it a disregard for the court order and a lack of respect for the judiciary.
The government expressed concern over potential economic and social consequences, urging against disruptions due to personal interests.

The genesis of the strike traces back to an assault on Joe Ajaero, the NLC President, in Imo State on November 1, 2023. Last week, the unions issued a nationwide strike notice, leading to the current standoff, with the nation grappling with the repercussions of a paralyzed power grid.
