Ugandan Opposition Leader Bobi Wine Reportedly Shot After Confrontation with Police

Uganda’s main opposition leader, Bobi Wine, has been shot in the leg following a confrontation with security agents, according to his party.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in a northern suburb of the capital, Kampala.

Videos shared online showed Mr Wine surrounded by supporters who were shouting that he had been shot in the leg. Some of his followers helped him into a waiting car.

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, ran for president in 2021, but lost to President Yoweri Museveni in an election he claimed was rigged against him.

His party, the National Unity Platform, which holds the most seats among opposition groups in the national assembly, stated on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Ugandan security operatives “have made an attempt on the life of” Mr. Wine.

“He was shot in the leg and seriously injured in Bulindo, Wakiso District,” they said.

It was not immediately clear whether Bobi Wine was hit by a live bullet or a tear gas canister.

Bobi Wine, seen in a photo from 2021 (AP Photo/Nicholas Bamulanzeki), was a well-known entertainer in Uganda before winning a seat in the national assembly in 2017.

He is particularly popular among young Ugandans living in urban areas.

President Yoweri Museveni, who has been a U.S. ally on regional security for many years, has held power since 1986. He had the constitution amended to remove the age limit for presidents.

Now 79 years old, Museveni has resisted calls to announce when he will retire.

Uganda has not experienced a peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence from Britain in 1962.
