The Federal Government has initiated a thorough investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this directive in a statement released on Wednesday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao.
According to DAILY POST, this action comes in response to reports concerning Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to prison earlier this year but allegedly did not serve his term in the correctional facility.
A viral audio, leaked by social critic Martins Otse (also known as VeryDarkMan or VDM), features what is purported to be Bobrisky’s voice claiming he spent his time in a nearby apartment rather than in jail.
The audio suggests that following his sentencing, an unidentified godfather contacted a senior prison officer who allegedly arranged for Bobrisky to stay in the rented apartment.
In light of these revelations, the minister emphasized that any instances of indiscipline, unprofessionalism, or corruption within the service will face serious repercussions.
“The Ministry will not tolerate any compromise on its core values of integrity, transparency, and accountability. We will leave no stone unturned in rooting out corruption and ensuring that those found culpable face the full wrath of the law,” the statement said.
The minister has assigned a dedicated investigative team, led by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, to investigate the allegations and provide a detailed report.
He assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, transparent, and impartial, emphasizing that appropriate disciplinary measures will be enforced against any personnel found to be at fault.
