Gunmen have abducted four students from Nasarawa State University in Keffi, a few kilometers from the nation’s capital, Abuja. All of the abducted students are first-year university students.
Rahila Hanya of the Science Laboratory Technology department, Josephine Gersho of the Computer Science department, Rosemary Samuel of the Business Administration department, and Goodness Samuel of the Geography department are the victims.
According to reports, the students were taken on Tuesday when the gunmen broke into their lodge in the Keffi Local Government Area town of Angwan Kare.
The event was confirmed by DSP Ramhan Nansel, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa Police Command.
He claims that early on Tuesday morning, the State Police Command got a distress call reporting that gunmen had broken into a house in Angwan Kare.
“The command is aware of kidnapping. At about 12:55 am, a distress call was received that a house located at Angwan Kaare, Keffi, was invaded by unidentified armed men.
“The police, in collaboration with the military, responded accordingly and combed the area, but to no avail.”
He claimed that in an effort to save the victims’ lives, the Commissioner of Police has issued an order for a manhunt for the criminals.
In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed a disturbing rise in student kidnappings. The situation escalated on October 4, 2023, when five female students from the Federal University in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina, were abducted.
Prior to this incident, on September 22, 2023, another group of students from the Federal University of Gusau, Zamfara State, fell victim to bandit kidnappings. Tragically, a total of 24 students were kidnapped during an attack on the Sabon-Gida community in Bungudu Local Government Area.
