Gunmen on Sunday stormed the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC), Eagle Parish, located along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, killing a 54-year-old prophet, Yomi Adetula, in a gruesome attack.
Witnesses reported that the assailants, numbering three, entered the church during a service at around 10:30 am. They opened fire on Adetula, who appeared to be their target, and inflicted further harm by mangling his head with an axe.
Confirming the incident in a statement, Police Spokesperson Omolola Odutola said, “Police officers raced to the scene and saw Yomi Adetula, ‘M,’ aged 54 years lifeless in a pool of blood which stained his white celestial garment lying face up.
“On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets, and his head was not spared… To ensure the victim was really dead, it was mangled with an axe.”
Odutola added that police inquiries revealed the attackers used a long double-barrel gun, which they fired at the prophet, killing him instantly.
The victim’s body has been deposited at the General Hospital Morgue in Ilaro, while the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who reportedly fled into the border area after the attack.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible clues will be revealed in the coming days as investigation has been launched into the very sad occurrence,” Odutola stated.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock, with security operatives intensifying efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice.
