President Donald Trump has terminated the government-funded security detail provided to Dr. Anthony Fauci by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The protection was withdrawn on Thursday night, leaving Fauci to arrange private security at his own expense.
Fauci, who played a prominent public-facing role during the Covid-19 pandemic, continues to face ongoing threats. In response to the loss of his NIH-provided security, he has hired private protection to ensure his safety, the source told CNN.
The move is part of what has been described as Trump’s “retribution tour” targeting former officials who served under his administration.

In addition to Fauci, Trump has also removed security details previously assigned to former National Security Adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The withdrawal of security raises concerns about the safety of former officials who remain high-profile figures in the public eye due to their roles in contentious periods of U.S. governance.
