BREAKING: WTO Reappoints Okonjo-Iweala for Second Term as Director-General

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and first African to head the World Trade Organization (WTO), has been officially reappointed for a second term as Director-General.

The WTO made the announcement on Friday, November 29, through its verified account on X (formerly Twitter).

The statement reads, “Breaking: The General Council has appointed Director-General @NOIweala for a second term, effective 1 September 2025. More details to follow.”

The World Trade Organization (WTO) confirmed that all 166 member states unanimously agreed to extend Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership during a closed-door session of the General Council.

At 70, Okonjo-Iweala will continue serving as Director-General beyond the conclusion of her current term in August 2025, with the reappointment highlighting broad consensus among WTO members.

While the process to select the next term was initially expected to take several months, her position as the sole nominee, along with strong support from African nations, expedited the decision.
