Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison for accepting $35 million in bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht.
The bribes were paid in exchange for securing a contract to build a road linking Peru to western Brazil.
Toledo, who governed Peru from 2001 to 2006, was arrested in California in 2019 and extradited to Peru earlier this year.
Despite denying charges of money laundering and collusion throughout the trial, the court found him guilty on Monday.
