The attack took place in the city’s centre, where the shooter used a powerful weapon to fire a number of shots. According to reports, the victims were sporting Swedish national team football shirts. The event happened at King Baudouin Stadium during a match between the Swedish and Belgian national football teams.
As soon as word of the attack reached the stadium, the game was called at halftime. Up until just before midnight, more than 35,000 of the game’s football spectators remained inside the stadium.
