Burkina Faso has officially issued its first Confédération des États du Sahel (AES) passport, with Captain Ibrahim Traoré as the first recipient. This development comes after Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali’s formal withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a significant step toward deeper regional integration.
Authorities in Ouagadougou have commenced production of the new passport, which will be available to citizens of the three AES member states.
While circulation began on January 29, 2025, ECOWAS passports will remain valid until their expiration to ensure a smooth transition.
Residents in Ouagadougou view the passport as a symbol of progress, with some believing it will help counter negative perceptions about the region. Cheik Diallo, a local graphic designer, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that many outsiders have been misled about the bloc’s viability.

Speaking to Africanews, he emphasized that the AES passport demonstrates the alliance’s functionality, enabling people to travel and conduct business independently of ECOWAS.
The passport’s introduction follows key decisions made during a ministerial meeting in Bamako on January 16, 2025. Among the resolutions is the establishment of a regional investment bank to finance infrastructure projects, improving connectivity and driving economic growth.
AES leaders have also reiterated their commitment to African cooperation, ensuring that ECOWAS nationals will continue to enjoy visa-free access to their territories.
The AES was formed as an alternative regional bloc following tensions with ECOWAS, particularly regarding governance and sanctions. With the introduction of a shared passport, planned economic initiatives, and enhanced political coordination, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are charting a course toward greater regional integration on their terms.
