BUSTED: Nigerian Railway Staff Collect Money from Passengers Without Issuing Tickets, Offer Poor Service

A passenger who travelled by train from Ibadan to Lagos on October 2, 2023, has alleged that some Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) staff lured her and her friends to board the train without tickets and collected cash in transit.

Daramola Adenike, who shared her experience on her X handle, said that a uniformed NRC official approached them at the entrance of Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Ibadan and acted like he was taking them to the ticket counter.

However, he led them to the railway platform without an official ticket and asked them to pay him in cash.
Dara also claimed that the same NRC staff sold coach 7 tickets to other passengers at Funmilayo Kuti Station in Abeokuta without assigning seats. She said that those passengers had no seats when they got onboard, and some of them had to share with others.

The NRC’s Director of Operations, Akin Osinowo, reached out to Dara and asked her to meet him in person to look into the issue. She declined and suggested a virtual meeting instead. She also sent him videos of the incident.

She said that she hoped that NRC would take action against the staff involved and improve the quality of their service. She expressed disappointment in the train’s poor condition and the NRC staff’s behaviour.

“I expected better from NRC. The train was dirty, noisy, and uncomfortable. The staff were rude, dishonest, and unprofessional. They took advantage of us and other passengers. This is unacceptable and should not be tolerated,” she said.
