U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has proposed that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state, suggesting that many Canadians are open to the idea due to ongoing political challenges in Ottawa.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump argued that Canada would benefit from significant tax savings and military protection if it were to merge with the United States.
His words: “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State.
“They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State,” he added.
In November, Trump raised the possibility of merging the two nations, citing concerns over fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration, particularly from the southern U.S. border. At a dinner with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump reportedly discussed the proposal, emphasizing its potential to resolve these issues.
