Reverend Father Andrew Obinyan, Catholic Priest has officially entered the race for the 2024 Edo State governorship, pledging his dedication to serving the people and instigating positive change in the state.
Speaking before journalists at the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) press centre, Rev Fr Obinyan affirmed his decision to join the gubernatorial race in response to calls and pressure from various groups.
Acknowledging his preparedness to serve, he underscored his training and readiness as a Catholic priest, expressing his eagerness to contribute to the betterment of the people of Edo State.
“I have received numerous calls from well-meaning Edo people and Nigerians across party lines urging me to contest the upcoming governorship election in our dear state. After extensive consultation and careful consideration, I am pleased to announce that I am heeding the call from Edo people and members of the movement,” Rev Fr Obinyan declared.

“As a priest, I am trained and equipped to serve and not to be served,” he emphasized.
However, the Catholic clergy has not yet revealed the political party under whose banner he intends to contest the gubernatorial race.
Jude Aigbona, the leader of the Rev Fr Obinyan Movement, appealed to Edo residents to consider supporting the priest’s candidacy, citing his credibility and trustworthiness.
Aigbona advocated for a transformative shift, expressing confidence that Rev Fr Obinyan’s leadership would usher in positive change, akin to a new era for Edo State.
Basil Ogwu, another member of the movement, commented, “This movement transcends party lines. After thorough consultation, we have found him to be credible. Having experimented with various candidates, this time around, we want to entrust leadership to a religious figure.”
