Church Roof Collapse in Northern Mexico, Killing 9

A tragic incident occurred during Sunday mass in a northern Mexican city when the roof of a church collapsed, killing at least nine people and injuring around 50.

The incident took place in the early afternoon in Ciudad Madero, a city on the Gulf coast near the port of Tampico. The collapse is believed to have been caused by a structural failure.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly into the night, searching for approximately 30 people who are believed to be trapped under the rubble. The state security spokesperson’s office confirmed that nine people had died from the collapse.

The diocese subsequently released a list of approximately 50 individuals who had been admitted to the hospital due to the incident. Among them were a 4-month-old infant, three children aged 5, and two aged 9. No immediate updates were provided on their health status.

The high number of young casualties, including three children among the deceased as reported by the police, could be attributed to the scheduled baptisms at the church.

Alvarez expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, particularly those who were present for the joyous occasion of their children’s baptism.
