The Canadian Embassy has announced a suspension of its operations.
This followed a fire incident at the commission, which resulted in the loss of two lives.
The announcement, made late on Monday night, has implications far beyond the embassy’s walls.
The halt in operations means a temporary cessation of visa and immigration services for those seeking to visit or emigrate to Canada.
Also, services for Canadians visiting and residing in Nigeria, as well as those in Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome, and Principe, have also been affected.

The news has been met with dismay by many Nigerians, particularly those with plans to travel to Canada.
For those in the midst of immigration procedures, the suspension represents a significant hurdle in their journey.
As of now, the Canadian High Commission has not provided a timeline for the resumption of its services.
Adding to the uncertainty, the Government of Canada has issued a travel advisory cautioning its citizens against non-essential travel to Nigeria.
This advisory echoes a similar warning recently issued by the United States to its citizens in Nigeria.
