’When Will Terrorists Face Justice Instead Of People Demanding Safety?’ Condemnations Trail Remand Of Students Protesting Against Insecurity In Edo

The remand of 52 students from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, who protested against insecurity in Edo State, has sparked widespread condemnation with stakeholders across Nigeria describing the situation as unjust and irrational.

The students who took to the street on Saturday to protest the rising kidnappings and killings, including the abduction of a prominent resident, Dr. Abu Babatunde were arrested in a midnight raid and charged with malicious damage and armed robbery, despite claims they were peacefully protesting kidnapping and killings in the area.

On Monday, A Benin High Court ordered the students to be remanded at Ubiaja Correctional Centre over the protest, a situation that has continued to draw condemnations.

Taking to X to voice their displeasure, prominent Nigerians described the actions of the Nigeria Police Force and the Edo State Government as an indicating abuse of power and a deliberate attempt to criminalize student activism.

An X user, @drkenon2 (Dr. Kenon) wrote ‘’Protest is now a crime in Nigeria. We can’t continue like this. These are students of Ambrose Ali University (AAU) who protested against rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity in Edo State, we demand their release immediately.’’

Lending his voice Nigerian broadcaster and news anchor, Rufai Oseni faulted the Edo government saying ‘’Students protest over kidnapping in Ekpoma but you arrest the students, why can’t you arrest the kidnappers and terrorist.’’

Also, A Nigerian medical practitioner and prominent netizen, @OurFavOnlineDoc (OurFaveOnlineDoc) wrote ‘’University students protest kidnapping in the state. The lunatic government unleashes police- not to hunt the kidnappers but to hunt the students, and imprison students. This happened just yesterday in Edo state. No. This is not a country.’’
