Controversial Kano Election Tribunal Judge Set for Supreme Court Promotion

Kano

In a move that has sparked widespread controversy and public outrage, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the elevation of Justice Moore Aseimo A. Adumein to the Supreme Court.Adumein, who signed the contentious judgment in the Kano governorship election appeal, found himself at the center of a judicial storm when the Court of Appeal contradicted its own ruling just four days after the initial decision.

The November 17 judgment, read by Adumein, upheld the Kano Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s decision, declaring Nasiru Gawuna of the APC as the winner.

However, the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Kano judgment, signed by three justices, set aside the tribunal’s decision and awarded a hefty cost of N1,000,000 to the NNPP against the APC.

Despite dismissing the contradictory declarations as “clerical errors,” the appellate court’s about-face triggered a national outcry, with calls for a thorough investigation.

In a statement issued on December 6, the NJC announced its recommendation for Adumein’s promotion to the Supreme Court, a move that has further intensified the public’s scrutiny of the judiciary.

The NJC’s director of Information, Soji Oye, outlined that the swearing-in of all recommended candidates, including Adumein, to the Supreme Court bench awaits approval from Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequent confirmation by the Senate.

The statement also noted that heads of various courts recommended for appointment would undergo swearing-in ceremonies upon approval by their respective state governors and confirmation by their state Houses of Assembly.

“The NJC, at its 104th meeting on Wednesday, December 6 considered the list of candidates presented by its Interview Committee and at the end of deliberations, recommended the under-listed names of successful candidates as heads of courts and other judicial officers for the Federal and State Courts in Nigeria,” the Oye disclosed. #Kano
