Court Approves Bail for 69 Accused in Presumed Same-Sex Wedding

Sixty-nine individuals who were detained during a same-sex wedding ceremony in the Ekpan Community of the Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta have been released on bail. The news was confirmed by their lawyer, Mr. Ochuko Ohimor, who stated that each individual was granted bail for the sum of N500,000 and required two sureties.

According to Ohimor, the sureties must reside within the Effurun jurisdiction of the Court.

The police prosecutor, Vincent Orarumen, had initially objected to the bail conditions. However, the suspects’ attorney countered this argument, stating that the alleged crime was not a capital offense.

It’s worth noting that the suspects were first presented to the media on August 29 at the Ekpan Police Station, under the direction of the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Wale Abass.

The arrest was made by a specialized team of police officers from the Ekpan Division during what was described as an “all white party,” which was in fact a same-sex wedding ceremony.

The law enforcement authorities acted upon a tip regarding the alleged gay wedding. The suspects were taken into custody and subsequently charged.
