#EndBadGovernance Protest: Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Briton, Other Protesters for Treason, Terrorism

On Tuesday, the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court issued a warrant for the arrest of British citizen Andrew Wynne and several Nigerian nationals on charges related to treason and terrorism.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted an order in an ex-parte motion filed by the Inspector-General of Police and presented by Audu Garba.

The IGP accused the 10 detained Nigerian protesters, among others, of conspiring with Mr. Wynne to attempt the removal of President Bola Tinubu through unconstitutional means, among other charges.

When the motion was heard again, Mr. Garba mentioned that an ex-parte application requesting a warrant of arrest for certain individuals was before the court. The lawyer identified the individuals as Andrew Martin Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich), Lucky Ehis Obiyan, and Abdullahi Musa.

He stated that the fleeing defendants are implicated in charges of conspiracy, treason, incitement to mutiny, incitement of disaffection towards the government, and terrorism, in violation of sections 97, 410, 413, 416, and 412 of the Penal Code, as outlined in the Northern States Federal Provisions Act CAP P3 LFN 2004.

He also requested an order declaring them wanted in connection with these allegations.

The affidavit supporting the motion revealed that the investigation thus far suggests the fleeing defendants were allegedly involved in planning and coordinating the invasion and arson of the High Court Complex, the NCC office, and a printing press in Kano.

It has been alleged that the defendants were involved in the attack on Government House Kano, the Kaduna Investment and Promotions Agency office, the NURTW office, and several other buildings in August 2024.

Mr. Garba stated that others, who are currently at large, are being pursued, which underscores the need for the application.

He argued that if the application were granted, it would enable police officers and other security agencies across the country to utilize their resources to lawfully apprehend the fleeing defendants.

The lawyer urged the court to approve the application in the interest of justice.

Justice Nwite approved the motion, deeming it “meritorious.”

Previously, on Monday, the judge had ordered the detention of 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters at Kuje and Suleija Correctional Centres after they were arraigned on six charges, including treason.
