High Court in Abuja Orders Remand of 124 #EndBadGovernance Protesters for 60 Days

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted the police permission to remand 124 protesters, who were arrested during the recent #EndBadGovernance demonstrations, for 60 days while investigations continue.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the ruling based on separate ex-parte motions filed by the police, citing the necessity for further investigation and legal advice from the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

The protesters, aged 14 to 34, face serious charges including terrorism, treason, arson, and other treasonable felonies.

The police allege they were involved in a planned violent uprising against the government, orchestrated by terrorist groups both within and outside Nigeria.

Additionally, the court ordered that any minors among the suspects be placed in the Borstal Home of the correctional center during the investigation.

The police had submitted two motions to the court: one for 75 protesters and another for 49, accusing them of terrorism financing, conspiracy, and treasonable felonies.

The protesters were arrested in Abuja and various states, with some found in possession of Russian flags and other incriminating materials. Investigations are underway, with some suspects voluntarily confessing to their involvement.

The police requested additional time to complete their investigation, apprehend any sponsors, and obtain legal counsel from the AGF. The case has been adjourned until October 23 for mention.
