A Delta State High Court in Asaba has sentenced Police Inspector Ubi Ebri to death for murder.
Inspector Ebri was accused of killing Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a telephone repairer and seller, on April 5, 2023, during a stop-and-search operation along Ugbolu Asaba Road in the state capital.
The incident triggered widespread protests by youths in the city.

The prosecution, led by E.H. Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, alleged that Ebri was part of the police patrol team conducting the stop-and-search exercise.
According to reports, Mr. Onyeka and his wife were driving from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were stopped by the police team.
Inspector Ebri allegedly opened fire on their vehicle, fatally shooting Mr. Onyeka in the head while his wife, who was seated in the front with him, remained unharmed.
Presiding over the case, Justice C.D. Diai convicted and sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri to death.
