Crystal Palace Stuns Liverpool to Claim Community Shield at Wembley

Liverpool’s season began with a jolt, suffering a Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace in a penalty shootout (2–2, 3–2).

The contrast was striking: the Reds, fresh off nearly $300 million in summer signings, were outlasted by a Palace side whose spending barely topped $2 million.

The Wembley clash opened with a preseason feel but quickly found its edge. On his official debut, Hugo Ekitiké put Liverpool ahead, finishing off a pass from Florian Wirtz.

Palace hit back when Jean-Philippe Mateta squandered a one-on-one but earned a penalty after being brought down by Virgil van Dijk, converting it himself for 1–1.

Liverpool reclaimed the lead through an unexpected source—Jeremie Frimpong’s curling cross sailed directly into the net.

But Oliver Glasner’s team refused to fold. With 13 minutes to play, Ismaila Sarr latched onto Adam Wharton’s through ball and rifled a low shot inside the near post to equalize.

In the shootout, Mohamed Salah blazed Liverpool’s first effort over the bar, and Dean Henderson cemented his hero status with saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.

Despite misses from Eberechi Eze and Borna Sosa, Palace prevailed to win the Community Shield for the first time in their history—adding to their FA Cup triumph just months earlier.

For Arne Slot, it was a bruising competitive debut in charge of Liverpool.

For Palace, it was proof they could stand toe-to-toe with Premier League heavyweights, no matter the disparity in resources.
