‘In Other Countries Cyber Laws Protect Citizens, But Shield Corrupt, Failed Officials in Nigeria’ –Says Aisha Yesufu

Renowned activist Aisha Yesufu has expressed her concerns over Nigeria’s cyber laws, alleging that they are being used to protect corrupt officials and silence dissenting voices.

Her remarks were in response to statements by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, who declared that directing curses at individuals online constitutes cyberbullying, a criminal offense punishable by law.

In a series of tweets, Yesufu claimed that the government is weaponizing the laws to intimidate and harass individuals who criticize government policies or expose corruption. She argued that these laws are a threat to freedom of expression and democratic principles.

Yesufu tweeted, “In other countries, cyber laws are enacted to protect their citizens. In Nigeria, it seems cyber laws were enacted to protect corrupt and failed officials who are afraid of being criticised.”
