The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has attributed the ongoing increase in food prices in the country to Nigeria’s departure from the teachings of Allah (God).
The women expressed their concerns on Sunday in a communique issued at the end of their 39th annual national conference held in Akure, Ondo state capital.
“These challenges are as a result of our deviation from Allah’s injunction that when the community engages in corruption, Allah has promised that it would be visited with famine and insecurity,” an excerpt from the communique obtained by Peoples Gazette read in part.
In a communiqué jointly signed by its National Amirah, Rafiah Sani, and National Public Relations Officer, Maimuna Momodu, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) expressed concern over the persistent rise in food prices, attributing the issue to Nigeria’s deviation from the teachings of Allah (God).
The group suggested that the current famine and widespread hunger, which have sparked protests across major cities, are a reflection of Allah’s displeasure with the situation.
Additionally, FOMWAN linked the crisis to widespread corruption, emphasizing that women bear the brunt of the challenges as the cost of food, goods, and services continues to soar across the nation.
The group also expressed concerns over the rising spate of insecurity in the country, stressing that the challenges are enormous, saying it should have been everybody’s responsibility.
FOMWAN lamented the political patronage and other opportunities for women groups, noting that there are measures that could assist women in self-sustaining activities, which can facilitate family economic well-being.
It also urged women to key into female political education and participation to increase female access to development, funding for investment, and other facilities for the benefit of their family economy.
“FOMWAN to further collaborate closely with local, state, and federal government Institutions and other non-governmental organisations to facilitate active participation in agriculture and employment opportunities for women and girls.
“FOMWAN should intensify its collaborations with relevant organisations to establish safe space for women and girls.
“FOMWAN should ensure effective participation of women and girls in government interventions to help alleviate their worrisome poverty situation,” the communique further read.
