GEJ/Tinubu: Again, Yoruba Ronu, Dipo’s Double Standard Hypocrisy Revealed Over Minimum Wage

On March 17, 2015, Dipo Awojide, a vocal supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB), made a strong statement on Twitter.

He criticized then-President Goodluck Jonathan (GEJ) and urged Nigerians to vote him out. “GEJ failed & even his supporters know he failed. Enough of 50k jobs in Nigeria. Vote GEJ out. GMB is the man. Vote GMB. RT if you support,” Awojide tweeted.

This statement came at a time when many Nigerians were dissatisfied with the state of the nation under GEJ’s leadership. Awojide, along with others, believed that Buhari would bring the change Nigeria needed.

Fast forward to June 5, 2024, and Awojide’s tone appears to have shifted dramatically. In response to a discussion on minimum wage, he tweeted, “Dipo can you break down a minimum wage of N80K for a family with 6 children? Can you explain to me WHY someone earning a minimum wage produced 6 children? I have a PhD and I have 2. Don’t have children you cannot care for. We must discuss population control when we are ready.”

This sudden shift in perspective has sparked a debate about hypocrisy. Critics point out that the same Awojide who fervently supported APC and Buhari in 2015 is now questioning the feasibility of raising a family on a minimum wage. They argue that the economic situation in Nigeria has worsened under the APC leadership he supported, with many struggling to make ends meet.

Awojide’s comments on population control have added fuel to the fire. His statement, “I have a PhD and I have 2. Don’t have children you cannot care for,” has been seen as insensitive by many who feel that economic conditions and lack of opportunities, rather than personal choices, are the real issues affecting family sizes in Nigeria.

The timing of Awojide’s latest tweet is also significant. It comes under the leadership of Chief Bola Tinubu, another APC figure he supported to the presidency. Netizens argue that the economic challenges facing Nigeria today are a result of the policies and leadership of the same party Awojide supported so vocally in 2015.

This perceived double standard has led to a wave of criticism from various quarters. Many are questioning how Awojide can criticize GEJ for the state of the nation in 2015 while seemingly ignoring the economic difficulties under the current APC leadership, and blaming same on hapless citizens.
